We are all sadly aware of Jerry Sandusky, an assistant coach for Penn State, who was convicted of child molestation. Higher ups, including legendary Coach Joe Paterno, didn't do much to ensure that allegations against Sandusky were brought before the police.. So, the NCAA punished Penn State by suspending them from post-season play for four years, along with other punishment.
The football team continues to play so it did not receive the so called, death penalty, of NCAA sports. Well, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett has filed a federal lawsuit against the NCAA over these punishments. The NCAA being of course, made up of member colleges and universities.
Well, that's the basic background, now for my analysis. You got to be kidding me! I have detested the NCAA for imposing penalties on universities and athletes such as football player Dez Bryant for having lunch with ex-NFL player Deion Sanders and not telling the truth. You know why Bryant wasn't forthcoming with the NCAA, because it is impossible to know what is an NCAA rule violation and what is not.
You call a recruit too early that is a violation, you give a text at the wrong time that is a violation, you attend a high school game that might be a violation. There is a Byzantine spiderweb of NCAA rules and regulations that seem to exist to keep NCAA adminstrators in their job.
Ohio State has also been banned from post-season play, and that was for players trading their own jerseys for tattoos. That, and the coverup of this Watergate crime was enough to get Ohio State banned. Here in Wisconsin some years back, the Badgers suffered penalties for footballb players using discounts on shoes at a shoe store, available to every other student at the University of Wisconsin.
So now you can imagine my utter amazement that the one time the NCAA issued an actual punishment that was meritful, the molestation and coverup of little children by coach at Penn State, the governor of the state is whining about it. So let me get this straight, molesting small kids and its' coverup no real big deal but trading jerseys for tattos, not that's something serious!
The NCAA is a joke, it exists to exploit the talent of quasi-professional players who make millions for the universities, NCAA, networks, shoe and apparel companies. Ironically, the exploited Thai worker who toils in a sweatshop making college football jerseys makes more than Montee Ball of the Wisconsin Badgers makes.
What players like Ball get in scholorship, room and board is a minute fraction of what he makes for the university. That is of course why the NCAA doesn't allow players to declare for the draft until three years after their highschool graduating class. They want to exploit the players as much as possible even if they get injured in the process.
By the way, one of the reasons that Corbett has filed this lawsuit is because it costs the state of Pennsylvania $60 in football revenues, since Penn State is a public university. Well, that $60 million is going to child abuse awareness programs, so I think it is money well spent. Or, it could be used to giving an unnecessary bonuses to coaches of Penn State, either way, both well spent, huh?
