Mold is an Environmental Hazard and should be treated as one. Before mold can be remediated or cleaned off a surface it should be identified and quantified by a certified mold assessment professional. Certain types and amounts of mold should only be remediated by a professional mold remediation company certified to remediate mold.
If mold is suspected, only a test can determine the type of mold and the amount of mold present. If a test comes back positive for mold at unsafe levels then mold remediation will be necessary. You will first want to assess the amount of mold and location. Once this is done, you can determine the source or cause of the moisture problem. Companies that do the test should be able to write a remediation protocol. If the company is not certified to write a remediation plan do not have them do the mold testing. Use a mold testing company that does not do mold remediation but can give you the names of 3 or 4 mold remediation companies they recommend. This will insure there is not incentive to find mold. Insurance companies require a third party mold testing company for this very purpose.
