The suspect in the Mojave Desert shooting has been killed. NPR reports on Oct. 25 that the incident began with a phone call from the suspect to a police officer. The man has been identified as Sergio Munoz, and he wanted to shoot police but shared he would create trouble in another location.
A deputy found the suspect’s Dodge Dart, and a long police chase started. He had two people inside his trunk who he later tried to shoot. The suspect also tried to cause traffic problems while attempting to escape police and shot at officers.
The shooting spree ended on U.S. 395 after the suspect got out of his vehicle and tried to kill his hostages. Police were able to shoot and kill Munoz. The two hostages who were kept inside his trunk had to be taken to a hospital. Officials are not providing details about them.
The suspect is also implicated in the shooting of two other people in Ridgecrest. ABC News reveals Munoz was a heroin dealer and killed one of his friends. The Mojave Desert shooting led to school lockdowns, and U.S. 395 was also closed. Munoz may have posted information on Facebook before he was killed, but this has not been confirmed.
