Mohonk Mountain House closes for week: Norovirus-like symptoms hit hundreds

The historic N.Y. resort, the Mohonk Mountain House, is closed for a week due to a virus that has sickened hundreds of staff and guests at the popular vacation destination. By land and sea, some type of virus is making its rounds this year, first with a hotel at sea, a cruise ship, and now with a stationary hotel.

According to ABC local on Feb. 7, when people started to get sick last week at the Mohonk Mountain House, it seemed to spread quickly with hundreds reporting symptoms of this stomach bug, much like the Royal Caribbean cruise ship where hundreds fell ill last month.

A disaster-remediation company is on site and will be all this coming week sanitizing the entire hotel from top to bottom. The Mohonk closed on Friday and it will reopen on Friday, Feb. 14, just in time for all those Valentine's Day getaways.

This landmark is about 90 miles north of NYC and it sits overlooking a lake in Ulster County. The hotel resort has been owned by the Smiley family since the 1869. It has all the modern amenities, but it is like stepping back into the 1800s when you first happen upon this huge and beautiful resort.

The Tennessean reports that symptoms of this illness are consistent with norovirus, according to Nina Smiley, director of marketing for the Mohonk. Samples have been collected, but tests are not back yet to confirm or rule out the norovirus. The resort is working with the health department regarding this illness outbreak.
