Well, that didn't take long. Modern Warfare 3, the first person shooter video game, distributed by Activision, which had the biggest launch in entertainment history, has now passed one billion dollars in sales in only 16 days. Not only does this break records for previous video game titles, this surpasses the record for movie sales as well. The previous installment to Modern Warfare 3, Modern Warfare 2, took 60 days to reach the same milestone.
The previous record was held by the popular 2009 James Cameron movie Avatar, which took 17 days to reach one billion dollars in sales.
Activision is using this opportunity to compare Call of Duty to popular franchises such as Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings.
In addition to being the fastest selling game, Activision has said that the Call of Duty community has reached 30 million gamers. This number is larger than the combined populations of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris, and Madrid, Activision pointed out.
Amazon has declared Modern Warfare 3 as being the number one video game title sold in its store, even with there being three weeks left in the year.
