'Modern Family' stars backstage at the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards

The 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place on Jan. 27, 2013, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Here is what these Screen Actors Guild Award winners said backstage in the Golden Globe Awards press room.

“MODERN FAMILY”

Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series

Did you know that you were going to win?

Rico Rodriguez: No, we didn’t. It was so cool being able to roll out the red carpet and then coming here today and them calling our names.

Julie Bowen: They had you work today?

Rodriguez: Yesterday. They had us work, yeah.

Bowen: All of you had to work?

Ariel Winter: Not me.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson: Apparently they’re allowed to do that one day.

Sofia, at the beginning of the awards show, you told a story you told about your family thinking being an actress was like being a prostitute. Is that story true?

Sofia Vergara: Yeah. You come from a traditional Catholic home and being in that kind of business — I’m talking about 20-something years ago — it wasn’t very well-seen. But I did what I wanted anyway.

Can you talk about thank your fellow nominees in your speech?

Ferguson: In our last season, like “30 Rock” is or “The Office” is, if we could be at that level of perfection and hilarity and genius, then we really would have succeeded. Just to be mentioned in those groups is huge honor. A lot of us auditioned for roles on those shows and were maybe disappointed that we didn’t get them, so to be in the same room, nominated with those casts is really quite an honor.

What do you like to do to relax after getting awards shows?

Eric Stonestreet: I’m going to speak for everybody. We don’t get to work together as much as people think we do, because we shoot the show so modularly and separately. So tonight is just about hanging with each other and celebrating each other.

We’ve all said that winning this [SAG] Award, oddly enough, feels more special than the Emmys we’ve been fortunate enough to win and the Golden Globes, in a way, because we know that actors are voting for this. And that makes us feel good.

We know the struggles, we known the ups and downs, in our own way, of the career. And to be here and win it three years in a row is just a night of celebration for all of us. And to look at each other and know that we enjoy each other’s company and appreciate each other’s work and are thankful for our jobs.
