On last night's premiere episode of “Modern Dads,” viewers were introduced to four Austin, Texas fathers who are stay-at-home dads. As the episode titled “Piece of Cake” opens, the intro brings gives insight into their occupation. Stepdad Sean tells of backbreaking labor that includes blood, sweat and tears and if your mind wanders at little, someone gets killed. New dad Nathan mentions the life-and-death decisions where one must be on top of their game. Veteran dad Rick speaks of grueling hours, and if you do not have your s**t together, it can be hell. Single dad Stone deals with the physical and mental exhaustion of being bloody and bruised at times and when he gets to lay his head on the pillow at the end of the day, it is the greatest feeling in the world.
Nathan is 37, and a first-time dad; his one-year-old son Cormac is his only child. He admits to crying at sad commercials and feels like he has lost all his testosterone. His wife Truly is a medical director and is and will always be the primary breadwinner. He knows times have changed and the “Leave it to Beaver” days are over.
Stone is 41, and a single dad. He was raised among rock stars as his dad toured with the Grateful Dead. His two oldest children; Hunter, 20, and Lexi, who is 16 have settled into their own. Now his life revolves around his youngest child, his sassy 5-year-old daughter, Danica, who has him wrapped around her finger.
Sean is 38 and a stay-at-home stepdad. His girlfriend is Rachel is the breadwinner. Sean is a cancer survivor and stepdad to her daughters Arwin 8, and Joopsy, who is 5. Sean loves to dress up in costumes for the entertainment of the girls and anyone else who cares to check him out.
Rick is 42 and father of four kids and husband to Meghan. Their kids are J.T., 10; Zach, 7 and twins Katherine and Elizabeth, 1. Meghan wants to have a first birthday party for the twins, and will find someone to arrange the festivities. Rick believes that he can do this with the help of his friends, the other dads.
Nathan picked up Sean to meet the other dads at the park. They call it their dude time. While there, Stone received a text from a woman, he met at a flower shop named Bambi. They asked if he pollinated her yet? He replied in the negative, and wants only recreation from women, no procreation. So his friends suggest he get a vasectomy.
Rick springs his party idea on his friends and asks for their help. He wants a Godzilla party, because the twins have done to his sex life, what Godzilla did to Tokyo.
Stone went to see the urologist about getting snipped. After the brief explanation, he will sleep on it, because taking a casual attitude about his genitals is what brought him there in the first place.
Sean is attempting to build stocks, often known as pillories for the party. Not a master of power tools, he should count his fingers before, and after he attempts to do anything like this. First, he calls Rick to ask if he should do this, because it is medieval in keeping with the princess theme.
Rick and Nathan went shopping for a birthday cake. Nathan got the phone number of a pretty blonde, who knows someone who makes cakes. As the guys start decorating the park’s picnic area for the party, the blonde arrives with two cakes. She kisses Nathan and leaves; then he tells them that he went for the consultation and is not going through with the vasectomy.
Rick is dressed like a king, and the other dads are in medieval regalia. The moms and entire families are there celebrating when Sean arrives with Rachel. He is dressed like a court jester and is the first to try out the stocks as the kids and dads smear cake on his face. A party planner could not have done better!
