One of the first questions a new model railroader has to ask after determining what scale to model in is whether they want to start off with a model train set or not.
Quality model train sets can offer a beginner everything that they need to get started. A good kit will include track, an engine (or two), some cars, electrical supply, and maybe some accessories.
HO scale sets can range in cost and quality from basic sets such as the "Freight Runner" available from Walmart to higher end sets from companies such as Walthers which do not include the track, such as the "20th Century Set" at TrainSetsOnly.com and are really designed to help add cars to existing layouts and can cost over $1000.
A good thing about a train set is that you can purchase an inexpensive one and decide pretty quickly if model railroading is for you before investing large amounts of money.
In addition, a quality train set can be used in the traditional "around the Christmas Tree" layout each year even if you do not use it year round as a true model railroad.
Don't discount the train set as something only for beginners.
