Model horse retirement farm is reducing its size and relocating

Tranquility Farm is relocating its horse retirement venture and is completing plans to relocate to northern California. The president of Tranquility Farm, Priscilla Clark, has noted to Blood Horse on Dec. 19 that the overhead for the operation is just too much. The farm, located on 40 acres in the southern foothills of Tehachapi mountains [70 miles northeast of Los Angeles] is finding raising the money needed to operate extremely difficult.

Blood Horse notes that Tranquility Farm is one of the original horse retirement farms, and has established itself as a model for numerous others that followed.

Clark will take 20 of the remaining horses [those that have sponsors] to a 10-acre site in Cottonwood, located south of Redding in Shasta County near the Sacramento River.

As an example of one expense, Clark says that at the new location she will pay $900 annually for water, a sum that now is her monthly water charge. She is engaged in finding adoptive homes for many of the horses and expects to be in her new location in January 2014.

Clark feels that she could not keep asking the same people for money all the time. Most of the support has come from the generosity of Gary Biszantz, a breeder and owner who is also a founding member and primary benefactor, who named Tranquility in memory and for his father. The farm has mainly subsisted on the primary support of founding member and benefactor, Gary Biszantz, a breeder and owner who named Tranquility officially for his father. Other devoted owners have also stayed with Tranquility throughout the years.

She notes that Dr. Tom Willis, veterinarian, purchased Tranquility Farm and is prepared to board as “many horses as Clark can get sponsorships for.” Meanwhile, Clark is prepared to maintain the remaining 40 horses at $250 each per month and is seeking sponsorships.
