Mochitsuki Japanese new year celebration in Dallas on Jan 15

The Japan-America Society of DFW is proud to present Mochitsuki, the Japanese New Year celebration this Saturday, January 15 at Fujitsu's headquarters in Richardson, Texas.

This is a family affair that you will not want to miss.  From 2 PM to 5PM you visit the Fujitsu headquarters at 2801 Telecom Parkway in Richardson and get a taste of the following cultural activities:

  • Mochitsuki - pounding Japanese rice.  This unique method of pounding steamed mochi rice with a large wooden mallet is a workout and an art form.  You will be able to sample mochi and taste it with anko (sweet bean paste), kinako (roasted soybean powder), or nori (seaweed) with soy sauce. A new topping this year is a Sendai specialty kurumi (walnut paste).  
     

  • Kakizome - first calligraphy of the new year.  You can learn how to make your own Japanese calligraphy
     

  • New Year's Games for Children
     

  • Origami - paper folding
     

  • Ikebana - flower arrangements
     

  • Caricatures and Manga Style Art

Performers:

  • Kotomi-Kai Koto Ensemble
  • Dallas Kiyari Daiko - Taiko drumming from a local organization.  Open to new members.
  • Cherry Blossom Chorus - Japanese children sining Japanese songs
  • Daffron Kids Yosakoi Dancers
  • Kotokai Aikido Demonstration - demonstration of this traditional martial art
