The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, located by Wayne State and the Garden Bowl, is constant buzz of activity. They also never fail to have something for every one, from the literary crowd to the families to the nerds to art buffs. Here’s just a small handful of whats coming up in the next month.
This Friday be there for the book launch of a book written by Renee Hoogland, a WSU professor. This book entitled, “A Violent Embrace: Art and Aesthetics after Representation” is a piece that discusses what art does to the world and why we have the reactions we do. Hoogland will be there for discussion and to even read some excerpts from her book.
On March 8th, join in the 5th Annual Comic Jam where artists and illustrators make comics. This event is all about creating free-formed, unplanned works of art much like a poetry jam. This year they will have Ben Snakepit, an artist who’s been doing a comic about his day every day for the past 13 years. This event is brought to MOCAD with support from Green Brain, a Dearborn Comic shop.
Soon after on March 16th, there’s a chance to create and learn about the fascinating art of sandpainting. Artist Sameer Reddy, a widely known artist who tends to focus on the spiritual and the anti-material in his works, will be there as well to join in this meditative art. This is a temporary moment of creation where at the end, your piece will get brushed away much like the traditional sand mandalas.
