From established websites like Match and OkCupid to newcomers like Tinder, the landscape of mobile dating apps has become a pretty crowded one. How do you handle concerns about security and controlling the people who want to connect with you on them? That’s one of the issues mobile app SWOON decided to tackle with its new redesign.
SWOON’s revamp was aimed at making the app more female friendly, addressing both women seeking meaningful connection as well as the current dating technology landscape. SWOON’s Head of Product Molly Messenger, who inspired the redesign, took some time to answer a few questions for Examiner.com about it.
What makes Swoon different from other dating apps?
MM: First, Swoon is super easy and quick to start using. Just download the app, connect via Facebook and you're off and running! There's no profile to complete or questions to answer. Unlike most dating apps, Swoon gives you more control on who can contact you. With our mutual match feature, only the people you have said yes to, can contact you via in app chat. You will not be bombarded with messages, emails or texts from people who you have not expressed an interest in. Another unique feature is the ability to "LookBack" at a person you originally passed for a second look with a simple shake of your phone.
Coming soon, Swoon is excited to launch female-only features. One in particular that we are launching shortly is a share feature that will allow women to share a profile with a friend via text with a click of a button. Dating is very social for women, and we like to hear our friends' opinions. This new feature allows you to do just that. Or, if you feel he's not right for you, but you think he's a great fit for your friend, then you can play matchmaker!
What inspired Swoon's redesign?
MM: After Swoon's successful initial launch in March, we received great feedback from our users looking for feature enhancements and improvements. Shortly thereafter, I joined the Swoon team and was excited to implement our user feedback to make Swoon an even better, easier and faster app that is fun and accessible for young professionals, especially women. We've always positioned Swoon as the most female-friendly dating app on the market, and we're very proud to be among the few dating apps that are actually designed and built by women, for women.
The new Swoon incorporates a more sophisticated, modern and fresh design, faster user interface, important new user features, such as LookBack, and other technical and algorithmic enhancements to make it truly the best mobile dating experience.
How do you think dating apps have changed how singles connect?
MM: Young professionals are busy and don't have time to sit behind a desk and fill out a dating profile. Fortunately, it's a mobile world and dating apps make it easier for people on-the-go to date, in a fun and simple way. Perhaps the biggest shift is proximity capabilities, allowing apps, including Swoon, to match you with people nearby in real-time. It's fun to see people at a bar, an event, at the subway, or walking to work, browsing Swoon and matching in the same location.
What are your top tips for connecting via mobile dating sites?
MM: Making a good first impression is really important. Since there is less detailed profile information on mobile dating apps (which is intentional on Swoon to simulate an initial interaction you would have in real life) the photo is truly the main factor. Swoon exclusively uses Facebook to activate your account to help ensure authenticity and appropriate photos, so you will want to make sure your Facebook profile photo represents the best you!
