MMA Training: How to shed pounds and get into shape

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) training is a great workout. The reason MMA training is such a great workout to shed some pounds and get into shape is because it focuses on full body workouts. A lot of popular workouts tend to focus on a specific area during each training session. However, MMA training utilizes the entire body during a workout session which works your cardiovascular system as well as helps you shed pounds and tone the muscles.

MMA requires competitors to be able to fight standing up (striking), in the clinch (wrestling) and on the ground (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). These three disciplines require outstanding endurance and strength. One of the greatest benefits of MMA training is that individuals do not have to compete in the sport; you can just do the training and receive all of the great physical and mental benefits that the sport offers.

Endurance

MMA fighters need great cardiovascular endurance. MMA training builds a strong level of endurance through all of the repetitions of the different exercises. For example, the boxing training alone requires 16-ounce gloves on each hand to hit the pads. This simple one-pound weight can begin to feel like a 50-pound dumbbell when all of the movements are added in over time. Punching, holding the hands up, and sprawling all make for a tough and tiring workout.

Strength

Fighters need to be strong. It is that simple. Bodyweight squats, push-ups and pull-ups are all staples of a fighter’s regimen. Additional tools like battle ropes, kettlebells and suspension trainers are all part of a fighter’s training. These tools all work the entire body and leave the fighter looking fit and ready for any battle to come. This type of training is tiring but feels great when it is finished.

Equipment

If you decide you would like to get into the cage or octagon you will need to purchase some MMA equipment and gear. The bare minimum gear you will need is: headgear, mouth guard, MMA training gloves, and MMA shorts. The shirt is optional because you are likely to have a lot of shirts lying around house that you can use to train in. The MMA shorts are important because they don't have zippers that can cut your opponent. So, with a minimum investment you can start working out in the cage just like professional UFC fighters.

Conclusion

MMA training is a great way to get fit. It is not necessary to compete to get the benefits of this training. You will hit the pads, learn how to defend against being taken down and get back to your feet when you are taken down. The movements required to do all these things require endurance and strength. MMA training will provide you with both in a quick and fun workout.
