"Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting."
That immortal line in a title song written by Sir Elton John and covered by various bands including Nickelback featuring Detroit bad boy Kid Rock on vocals describes the mixed martial arts (MMA) scene in the Metro Detroit Area.
Tonight, two of the biggest promotional outfits in the state go head- to- head against each other with their own brand of MMA pomp and pageantry in what promises to be an exciting night of full contact, no- holds barred and in your face fighting featuring some of the best practitioners of the sport in Michigan.
Donofrio Entertainment, in partnership with Impact Fight League and Palace Sports Entertainment, presents "MAYhem at the Palace" in Auburn Hills while World Xtreme Cagefigting (WXC) will commence their ambitious "Victorious Amateur World Championship Tour" at the Cobo Hall in downtown Detroit.
The light heavyweight match- up between Shamir Garcia (13-2) and Lee Trombley (7-2) headlines the MAYhem at the Palace event, while familiar face Dequan Townsend (23-8) will square off against Tyler Pitock (11-7-1) in one of the WXC Victorious cards.
There is no question that both promotions have their own share of good and exciting fighters in their fold. Names like Muhammad Abdullah (13-6) and Joel "Little Juggernaut" Chapman have been consistenly gaining followers because of their game. This writer has seen some of the fighters strut their wares in past events and has been impressed with their abilities and dedication to their craft.
While the said events are a reflection of the current state as well as the growth of MMA in Michigan wherein two outfits can hold two huge quality events simultaneously as well as try to outdo each other, it also does not diminish the fact that MMA fans will have to choose on which event they will eventually watch and attend to on fight night. And also, some MMA fans have expressed their concern to this writer on whether this practice of putting two big fights on the same weekend will take its toll on the sport in the long run.
