Monday, January 21, 2013, City Year partnered with T-Mobile to volunteer their services at El Monte Elementary School in Concord, California. El Monte is an innovative school in Mt. Diablo Unified School District, a frequently featured school in Examiner articles. Application was made by principal Christina Boman to City Year, and chosen to be the location for this national event. Teacher Linda Ortega received news of the event from Tim McGallian, local Concord Kiwanis member. Linda introduced Christina to Tim, who then connected Rod De La Rosa from T-Mobile with Christina. Jarrett Poston, Impact Director, and Stephanie Kim, assistant, from City Year/San Jose were responsible for coordinating the day’s events. Each City Year location sponsors 4 volunteer events per year.

There was a great deal of support which included 210 participants including employee volunteers from T-Mobile, Concord Kiwanis, Concord High School Key Club (junior Kiwanis), CARES after school program adults, and many El Monte community members including parents. T-Mobile had the largest representation and included individuals primarily from their sales department, but also IT representatives as well as other employees.

School board member Cheryl Hansen came for the day’s activities, along with state assemblywoman Susan Bonilla and her assistant, Brandon Bjerke. The sheer number of attendees was impressive enough, but equally impressive was the attendance of these well-known leaders. The real success, however, were the accomplishments of the well-choreographed teams. On the weekend prior to the event, preparations were made so that when the teams arrived, everyone could get down to business.

The photos speak for themselves, that they did indeed get lots of business taken care of! Not only was there a great deal accomplished, but when staff and students arrived on Tuesday morning, the oohs and aahs of appreciation and delight were the resounding vote of gratitude and thanks for all the projects. Special thanks to all the teams and individuals that donated their holiday to volunteering time and hard work to El Monte Elementary.
