Green Cove Springs has been awarded the inaugural “Drum Major For Diversity” presented by the MLK Day-N-Clay Committee.
Dr. William Randall, chairman of the Board of Directors of the MLK Day-N-Clay Committee, presented the plaque to Green Cove Springs Mayor Debbie Ricks during the MLK Day-N-Clay luncheon held at the Augusta Savage Arts and Community Center.
Nearly 100 volunteers from Green Cove Springs and Clay county planted trees and shrubs during the City’s MLK Day-N-Clay landscaping project for the center.
Named for artist and civil rights activist Augusta Savage, the community center provides after-school programs and houses the Police Athletic League, The Food Pantry of Green Cove Springs, Episcopal Childrens Services and other service agencies.
This year’s MLK Day-N-Clay was the first county-wide observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service in Clay county history.
Part of President Obama’s United We Serve initiative, MLK Day-N-Clay and the tree planting project are presented in conjunction with Black History Month and Florida’s observance of Arbor Day.
