While many on the east coast of our majestic US of A were enjoying the presidential inauguration festivities on the third Monday in January, also know as (aka) Martin Luther King Jr. Day, approximately 2,700 miles away many happy souls enjoyed FITS (fun in the sun) and record-breaking temperatures of 81 degrees at Santa Monica Pier.
The third Monday in January has been deemed the annual day to honor a man, Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK), who dedicated his adult life to furthering civil rights in America. On this day in 2013 young, old, black, white, bigger, smaller, taller, shorter, richer, poorer, hairy, bald, bikini-clad and fully suited (to name a few) were all welcome, representing and co-existing harmoniously at and on one of the longest, oldest, most recognizable and most fun in the sun places in the United States, Santa Monica Pier (the pier).
Those enjoying the pier were privy to delights for all senses. There was music and singing. There was the sound of waves crashing. There were smells of funnel cakes, burgers and sea food, not to mention the ocean. There was the feel of the wood on the pier under foot as you traversed the pier's length and width. There was plenty of variety of items to tempt the taste buds, even Taco Bell is served at this border stop. There was the sight of the Ferris wheel and arms raised delightfully in the air as the roller coaster travels its railed route.
The experience reminded this writer of the Love Actually movie. All around people were laughing, hugging, kissing and giving their cameras a workout. The great news is this cornucopia for the senses is available year round at Santa Monica Pier. Now, what would be better than that?
Santa Monica Pier is open 24 hours a day, Monday through Sunday, and located at 200 Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, CA 90401.
