The 2014 MLB Power Rankings for Week 9 are out and right now nobody is playing better baseball than the Detroit Tigers. According to a Sportsline report on May 18, Detroit, fresh off of a sweep of the Red Sox in Boston, leads all of Major League Baseball with a 27-12 record and a .692 overall winning percentage. Add to that the Tigers are 14-4 on the road this season and it looks like Detroit has the "Eye of the Tiger" so far in 2014.

The Tigers have many new faces compared to the 2013 squad, and the new chemistry seems to be even better than they were last season. Rookie manager Brad Ausmus admits he talks to former Detroit manager Jim Leyland quite a bit these days, but make no mistake, Ausmus has solidified himself as the new sheriff in Motown – and so far so good.

With all the fire power on Detroit, one of the key players so far for the Tigers in 2014 is left fielder Rajai Davis. Davis was picked up by Detroit in the off season with thoughts of him platooning with Andy Dirks and Don Kelly. After Dirks’ injury in spring training, Davis has played the majority of games in left field and has made the most of his opportunity.

Rajai is hitting .283 with 3 home runs, 13 RBI and 11 stolen bases. Davis along with Ian Kinsler have helped give the Tigers a new identity with their speed on the bases.

Right behind the Tigers in a virtual tie for first place are the Oakland A’s. Oakland, who is 9-1 in their last 10 games, leads the Western Division by 3.5 games over LA. The A’s just seem to have the magic touch year in and year out. In spring training all the experts talked about out West is the Angels and Rangers battling it out for a division title, yet the A's once again have proven they aren't going anywhere!
