MKE on the rise- April 2014

Welcome to the April edition of MKE On The Rise, the monthly segment where a different band, artist or other important element of the Milwaukee local music scene is highlighted. When I started MKE On The Rise at the beginning of this year, the purpose was to bring exposure to the artists and bring new music to the fans. In previous months I have done segments on aspects of the Milwaukee hip hop scene: Amerika's Addiction, Uptowner's Open Mic Night and RueThePoet. This month I have gone in a different direction with the topic of MKE On The Rise to highlight the fact that Milwaukee's music scene is diverse and the talent spans all genres.

The subject of the April edition of MKE On The Rise is Jaems Murphy's Vedic Eden. Vedic Eden is a complex, genre bending 7-piece Mystic Folk-Pop ensemble formed by composer Jaems Murphy in 2011. The members of Vedic Eden come from different musical backgrounds and that is clearly represented in their unique, diverse sound. Through the use of hypnotic guitars amidst layered vocal harmonies and intricate percussion, Jaems Murphy's Vedic Eden create a unique soundscape that is unlike anything else in the city.

Jaems Murphy has been involved in the Milwaukee music scene in various aspects for years, having collaborated with many different artists in the Milwaukee scene. Vedic Eden is by far his most personal project. For the Vedic Eden he enlisted the help of Keshena Armon to handle keyboard duties and to assist with percussion and vocals, Adam Dosemagen on the upright bass, Jon Liedtke on electric guitar, Michael Neumeyer playing trumpet and also assisting with background vocals and percussion and with Bob Schaab and Cody Calderon sharing completing their complex, multi-layered live percussion. Jaems Murphy's Vedic Eden draws influences from global rhythms and recording artists such as Donovan and Tom Waits, but has managed to forge their own completely unique sound.

Vedic Eden released their debut full length CD “Mono No Aware” in Spring of 2014 to critical praise and positive reviews from those in the Milwaukee scene. Jaems Murphy's Vedic Eden has spent the early part of 2014 doing a handful of shows in support of the debut release. This includes a show May 17th at Fixture Brewing Company in Waukesha. Vedic Eden will also be a part of a diverse line up for a multi-genre show sponsored by Random Media Distribution in early June. Jaems Murphy's Vedic Eden is just one example among many of the deeply artistic and diverse nature of Milwaukee's music scene.
