Miyazaki's "Ponyo" still fighting the box-office current

"Ponyo" has been in theaters for four weeks now and has made $13.7 million to date. It took in half a million on Labor Day alone, putting it at 14th in the box office for that day.  Last weekend it finished 16th.

In terms of theatrical anime releases in the United States, "Ponyo" is currently fifth - directly above it is 2001's "Pokemon 3 - The Movie" with a total gross of $17.1 million.  The top three are the first two Pokemon movies and "Yu-Gi-Oh: The Movie," which is third with $19.8 million.

"Ponyo"'s success in this regard is considerable, since all four of the other movies above it had well-established merchandising lines and television shows to build its popularity before coming to theaters.  If given a few more decent weekends, "Ponyo" may just find its way upriver.

While last weekend unexpectedly saw a slight increase in theaters showing "Ponyo," this weekend sees a Youngstown and Toledo theater drop off the list.
