Mixing it up with fashion designer Ivan Idland

When you walk into your neighborhood bar or favorite establishment where drinks are served, you would not think to ask the bartender to design an outfit to go along that vodka martini you ordered. But if you happen to come across Ivan Idland tending bar in Minneapolis, he could fulfill such a request.  You see, Idland, who doubles a fashion desginer, has been a fixture on the Minneapolis indie fashion scene for quite some time.

This year will mark Idland's third appearance at the Twin Cities' premiere indie fashion event, the rock and fashion fusion show, Voltage: Fashion Amplified 2011 which will take place on Friday, April 15 at First Avenue.

Idland, who started with Voltage in 2008 is a band designer, creating custom outfits for the featured performers, and who graduated to a runway designer the following year, took time from sewing and mixing to talk about how it all began, good days, bad days and great days.

In the beginning...

I began in 2002 just altering and making clothes for myself.  After a while, people would see what I was wearing and ask me if I could make something for them.  It just gradually snowballed, and in 2007, I did the last DIVA show at IMS and then Voltage the next year, which all kinda led to where I am today.

Who is on Team Idland for Voltage?

Larissa Loden for of Left Hand Originals is doing accessories, Angel Yang and Melinda Guejardo are doing styling, and sewing support is performed by Rebekah Archer; and of course, Vision, is providing models.

The Ivan Idland woman loves to…

The Ivan Idland woman loves to laugh, be social, go to fun events, be noticed, have strangers come up to her and ask, "Where did you buy that outfit?”  She doesn't take herself too seriously.

A good day is when…

A good day is when it’s a snow day and all the city is shut down.  The sounds of the city are muffled and cushioned, and all the sharp edges become nicely rounded.

A bad day is when…

I bad day is when you find out bitches been talkin’ smack about you.

A great day is…

A great day is when you manage to get like a million things sewn and fitted, and polished, thrown on models, and shown at the biggest rock and roll runway show in town!

A Bit of Randomness...

Who would you like to have lunch with?

Maybe all those old friends from high school and college who have friended me on Facebook but I haven't seen for years and years.  It would be nice to catch up on a less cyber basis.

Favorite geometric shape?

Pyramid.  I want to live in one!

Favorite Quote?

"I look back at where I'm from, look at the world that I've become, and the strangest things seem suddenly routine". - Hedwig and the Angry Inch

"Project Runway" or "The Fashion Show"?

I guess I've only seen Project Runway up to the season with Ra'mon Lawrence and Christopher Straub and haven't seen the other show at all.  I stopped watching TV pretty much altogether two years ago.

What celebrity is in dire need of your help?  And how would you dress him/her?

Ummm…I don't know. I don't get into celebs that much…It would be fun to dress Paris Hilton in something funky and original just for my own selfish reasons, since she gets so much media attention.

Where can we find your clothes?

I love working one-on-one with a client, getting to know them on a personal level and designing something for them that I think they will love and will look most flattering and appropriate for their individual body type and personality, so I'm always open to that.

Keep those phone lines ringing! But as far as retail, Cliche is THE place.
