Mixed Martial Arts heats up in Louisville as summer winds down

We have reached the "dog days" of summer now and anyone in the Ohio River Valley knows just how miserable it can get watching a live sporting event at this time of year. Only diehard fans are braving the heat to take in baseball, softball, and volleyball games and the heat is enough to keep most casual golfers off of the courses. The good news is that you have plenty of opportunities in August and September to take in Mixed Martial Arts events in and around Louisville from the comfortable confines of various air-conditioned venues.

The next local event on the schedule is the CORE Grappling Challenge presented by Helio Soneca. The event will be held on Saturday, August 13, at The Basketball Academy in Louisville (2401 Stanley Gault Parkway  |  Louisville, KY 40223-4175  |  (502) 244-6677). The event will feature the top grapplers from all over Kentucky & Southern Indiana, and will also bring competitors from other states. Grappling is the cornerstone of modern mma, and coming out to watch this will allow you to see the finer points of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and other submission grappling disciplines. If you watch the tournament and you are left wanting more, there are several Mixed Martial Arts events over the next two months to satisfy your appetite.

The Kentucky Fighting Challenge has agreed to a deal with the Ramada Plaza (6700 Bluegrass Parkway) to host three MMA events, the first of which will be held on August 27 in the Ramada's Triple Crown Pavillion. The Kentucky Fighting Challenge is one of the longest running promotions in Kentucky, and their all-amateur August event marks the first time in over seven years that they have been to Louisville to hold an event. The KFC closes out the month of August for Louisville MMA.

There are two fantastic Pro/Am events being held in the Louisville area in September. Hardrock MMA will be hosting "Hardrock MMA 40: Pro/Am" on Saturday, September 3, at the Paroquet Springs Conference Center (395 Paroquet Springs Drive) in Shepherdsville, which is just south of Louisville. The event is headlined by Louisville's Josh "Pitbull" Blanchard (Bad Dog MMA) as he faces Chad Deener in Deener's Professional MMA debut. The fight card is bolstered by several other fighters from Louisville, so it will be worth the short drive down I-65 to see quality Kentucky MMA action.

The following Saturday (9/10/11) brings the return of Second2None Cage Fights as they invade the Derby Park "Expo Dome" (2900 S. 7th St.) in Louisville. S2N will have three pro fights on the card and will also have an amateur battle between Cody "King" Kessinger and Brandon Scott for their Bantamweight Championship. S2N is a great way to close out this run of local MMA in the summer, and will introduce you to fighters from all over the Derby City. If you ever want to check out upcoming MMA events anywhere in the state of Kentucky, please head over to the Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Authority's website. Keep checking back for more Louisville MMA updates!
