Mixed martial arts is just as the name implies a mixed discipline of martial arts moves that makes for the spectacle that it is...there are arm bars, choking, knee kicks, punching and because of these there are sudden victories and jarring defeats.
Victories can come in a second because of a tap out due to a choke or an arm bar and also with a spinning back fist or a side kick to the head or body causing what in boxing is a knockout. The discipline of these martial artists is sometimes astounding and the punishment they deliver and receive is astounding to watch. The undersized boxing gloves make the competitors hands available for wrestling moves while still being padded for delivering punches.
In non-championship fights the matches last three rounds of five minutes each. In UFC fights you'll see the octagonal ring but in other non-UFC mixed martial arts fights there is a similar but slightly different kind of ring with no cage enclosing the ring. I'll get into that in another story.
