As the summer comes to an end most kids get anxious while many parents are secretly high fiving God. The whole “back to school” routine brings about a mixed bag of emotions.
As the parent of teenagers it feels like they not only take a vacation from school but they make every effort to step outside of society through the summer months.
Initially this is okay since they’ve worked hard through the school year and it feels like they deserve some downtime but before long, it is just too much.
Teenagers stay up all hours during the night and sleep the days away. And, when they are up they seem to have their hand out for something but when you ask for help mumbled words of misery are spouted back. How dare you interrupt their gaming schedule! Each and everyday is self-centered and a social extravaganza. Were we all like this as teenagers? Please tell me no!
These are the years when these little angels start pushing the limits, they believe they know everything (giving little credit to the adult) and, heaven forbid, they become sexually awakened. One starts to wonder if they’ve grown horns beneath their hair!
Yes, don’t get me wrong, they are our future and I, like you, love them. This is why we’ve spoiled them so and created such darlings (sarcastically speaking of course). The good news is, they do go back to school and this enables them to, once again, join society while a slight breather is gifted to each parent; a well-earned break.
This doesn’t mean parental duties have diminished because they are actually heightened. It is critical to stay on top of your teen’s academics. And, it seems, each year they are tasked with more and more projects. It becomes a job just keeping up with their agenda!
Parenting really is a thankless job especially during the teen years. And, the back to school routine really is a blessing. As hard as it is, it is teaching our children responsibility and the education required to turn their self-centered focus outward into the world. They truly are our future and, with a nudge or maybe even a push, they’ll rise to the occasion and they’ll make us proud!
Take a deep breath and wave goodbye as you welcome the 2011 school year.
