A Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution modified for rally use is a common vehicle to be seen attempting dangerous 100 mph jumps. A corner jump with uneven camber is the most dangerous launch terrain for a rally car jump. The launch of the the vehicle determines the quality and approach of the landing. Minor changes can be made by pressing the brakes to bring the nose down, giving it gas to bring the nose up.
The style of how you compress the suspension upon entering the jump also plays a large factor in trajectory and landing. A smooth launch typically starts out with a tap on the brakes at the right time so the launch terrain compresses the shocks. Timing is everything! With out perfect timing, a seemingly innocent jump can turn disastrous in a split second. Jumping also requires upgraded suspension and chassis reinforcement both for safety and jump procurement. A well built chassis is more predictable to jump than an stock chassis subject to flex.
Watching the footage below you can see that the driver made several mistakes and almost lost the car. Had the vehicle been just slightly more tilted, a flip could have occurred causing fatal damage to the vehicle. Upon entering the jump the inertia was still being regained from the previous obstacle. By using slightly less speed and more precision less time could have been accomplished through the jump. Landing awkwardly, the Evo must regain control on the vehicle before progressing through the course resulting in lost time. With a better approach and launch, this near miss could have been completely avoided.
