Thanks in part to a social media campaign by fans and reporters, El Paso high school student Mitchell Marcus will be interviewed on ESPN Thursday morning. Aaron Rich, sportscaster at NewsChannel 9 in El Paso, Texas posted Wednesday evening on his Facebook page,
“Mitchell Marcus will make his ESPN debut tomorrow morning! I've just learned that SportsCenter will be talking to Coronado Head Coach Peter Morales and Marcus in their 9am show. This after Mitchell's story went viral and CBS's Steve Hartman featured him on the Evening News.”
When the ball went out of bounds during the final moments of a high school basketball game on February 12, it seemed that Mitchell Marcus' one and only chance to score for his team been lost. Then, to the delight of the crowd, rival team member Jonathan Montanez, in the ultimate act of good sportsmanship, passed the ball to Marcus who, moments later, scored his first-ever high school game basket.
Marcus, who is developmentally disabled, can now proudly say that he helped end the game with a 55-40 point win, moving the team's record to 31-1 on the year.
