Spirituality is in the air.
To reinstate his worth to America, one of the most disliked politicians needs a win. It is not that Mitch would go hungry by losing his reelection bid. He has already feathered his nest on K Street where he could make vastly more income while having more fun.
But, he is a man of deep pride and would like to redeem his stature, and for that reason he may be motivated to save the day by producing agreement that Republicans can accept on the shutdown and debt ceiling. After that, he can gallop off to Kentucky to do some serious campaigning.
What might be in the cards?
Just as Republicans had to shed the attack on Obamacare, they may now have to open the doors to government and end the shutdown. The focus must be on the terms and conditions of raising the debt ceiling.
Democrats may be asking too much by seeking increases from sequestration limits on some programs. That is fodder to give up in exchange for averting a disastrous default.
Here’s a good story describing the current situation from the Washington Post this morning.
“Senate leaders’ talks on shutdown, debt limit stall as sides await market’s reaction
By Lori Montgomery and Rosalind S. Helderman, Published: October 13
What started as a mad dash to strike a deal to lift the federal debt limit slowed to a crawl over the weekend as stalemated Senate leaders waited nervously to see whether financial markets would plunge Monday morning and drive the other side toward compromise.
Republicans seemed to think they had more to lose. After talks broke down between President Obama and House leaders, GOP senators quickly cobbled together a plan to end the government shutdown — now entering its third week — and raise the $16.7 trillion debt limit. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) then asked Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) to elevate negotiations to the highest level.”
