On March 4 2014, the first online professional course called "Tackling the Challenges of Big Data" will be offered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The class will spread over 4 weeks and is designed for professionals and executives, covering several topics on the subject of big data such as storage and processing, visualization. The cost of this course is $495 and participants who complete the course will receive an MIT Professional Education certificate. Additionally, this means that the already successful international network of MIT Professional Education alumni will be booming.

The course, part of a new type of professional programs, "Online X", will be delivered through the MIT and Harvard founded EdX open-sourced online education platform. The EdX consortium, comprising the University of Hong Kong, University of Toronto, Kyoto University, Université Catholique de Louvain, the University of Queensland Australia among many other, is now growing in a new direction with professional education while keeping its global scope.

This innovative program brings a whole new dimension to remote education and to professional development worldwide as it makes courses that would not have been accessible to all, available through this platform, giving a better chance to learn and improve from the best institutions to professionals internationally.
