Army wife, Misty Shaffer, achieved a 100 pound weight loss while her husband, Larry Shaffer, was overseas in Afghanistan. The couple have been together since high school -- and although Misty was always heavier than she wanted to be -- Larry was just fine with her the way she was. Misty, however, wanted to change that for the better when her Army husband was deployed to Afghanistan in 2012, CNN reported March 18. The military wife's 100-lb. loss was one of the best things she ever did.
The 25-year-old in Leland, N.C., was 260 pounds when her husband left. Her heaviest weight ever was 300 pounds. By the time Larry returned, Misty Shaffer had reached a 100 pound weight loss goal and going down the scales to 155 pounds. The 5'6" tall woman used to wear a size 22 and 24 and now wears a women's size 6.
"I would eat when I was bored. I'd eat three huge meals a day, and then snack in between. Sad or happy, I'd turn to food for everything," Misty noted of her earlier eating habits.
Misty wanted a better life for herself and her family. She was done with being picked on and through with feeling tired all the time. She did this by eliminating junk food and replacing sodas with water or coffee. She admitted that the first three to four months were the most difficult in changing her lifelong eating habits, but she began craving healthier foods once her body adjusted.
The 100 pound weight loss journey was all the more challenging when Misty performed her job duties as a personal supermarket shopper. The aroma of fried chicken was hard to resist, but she focused on the choices of fresh salads and fruits and vegetables.
So, how does Misty maintain her healthy lifestyle? She eats lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and limits her portions on the rest of the foods she eats.
When Larry arrived home from Afghanistan in May 2013, his response to his wife's new look was, "Wow!." He emphasized how much he loved her the way she was before and was happy to see her do this for herself.
The biggest deal to Misty in this whole thing was the fact her husband could pick her up -- something he hadn't been able to do before.
The Misty Shaffer 100 pound weight loss story is inspiring to a lot of women out there who want to do the same for themselves. Any woman knows how good it feels when her husband can pick her up!
