St. Charles, MO - They say ignorance is bliss, but sometimes it can be deadly. A woman has been charged with animal abuse after leaving 25 cats and 2 dogs inside of a hot vehicle for 2 hrs this past Sunday.
St. Charles police arrested Lori Pellin, 39, was inside of a casino. Pellin told the police that she had become homeless 3 days before and she was inside of the casino to use a computer and look for an apartment. She also indicated that she wanted to do a bit of gambling.
Thankfully, concerned passersby notified police of the animals in the hot vehicle. The 25 cats and 2 dogs were rescued from the vehicle and all survived, despite the high temperatures outdoors.
Police reported that the interior of the car was in deplorable condition - trash, food and feces were throughout the vehicle.
The St. Charles City Animal Control welcomes donations to help care for the confiscated animals. Interested donors can contact the shelter at (643) 949-3395.
Thankfully these animals were saved from the excruciatingly hot conditions inside of Pellin's car. Ignorance is not an excuse - everyone should know that dogs and hot cars do not mix.
Plan ahead - do not take your pets with you if you are running errands or traveling when the temperatures are warm. Even a mildly warm day can make the interior of a vehicle hot enough to be deadly. Cracked windows are not good enough, nor is the shade of a tree - interior car temperatures can still become deadly to cats or dogs left inside.
Kudos to the concerned people that took the initiative to phone the police. Had they closed their eyes and ignored the situation, the animals would have surely died a painful death.

Omg, I'm glad... she needs to learn her lesson!
You would think people would know better. Glad the animals are okay.

Wow. Not only is it terrible to leave the animals in a hot car, they were also in a cramped, filthy environment. That is awful.
They need to stick that lady in a hot car with windows up and let here slowly cook! Ugggg!!
SO GLAD THE ANIMALS ARE OK I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND HOW PEOPLE JUST DONT CARE WHAT THE HELL WAS SHE THINKING O SHE WASNT
Thats something ... She is inside air conditioning having a cool drink. Should have posted her picture. It was really hot that day. Thank you to the people who repored it.
Glad all the animals are okay, but the woman should be submitted to what she did to those animals to get a taste of her own medicine. How cruel.
She is obviously insane. The first clue is the fact that she had 25 cats... in a car. Second she just lost her home and she thought she "would do a bit of gambling." She is not even close to this place we call reality!
hope the public comes out now to adopt these guys...most of MO is a gassing state,so from the hot car to a gassing oven? I hope not
Sadly, this kind of incident happens all the time. Every year, animals (especially dogs) die after being intentionally locked inside cars while their owners shop or run other errands. When it is 72 degrees outside, the temperature inside a car can rocket to 116 degrees within an hour, even with windows cracked.
If you see an animal in distress inside a vehicle, please follow the example set by the casino guest and call your local animal control agency, police department or humane society right away. Had it not been for that Good Samaritan, these animals could have suffered organ failure, brain and nerve damage - or even death.
The My Dog is Cool Campaign operated by United Animal Nations lets people know that leaving a dog (or cat) in a car for even just a few minutes may be too long.

People ask me why I rather spend time with my 3 rotts and 2 cats...well, here's a great example why.
