Missouri Valley Fantasy League - Week 1

Week 1 of the Missouri Valley Fantasy League is in the books, and the trash talk is already deafening… mostly coming out of Omaha…

For those who aren’t in the league, we conducted a phone conference draft on December 26 and drafted five players each. There are 10 owners in the league, but one didn’t make the draft, so a team was put together after the draft, and named as the “dummy” team. A young man named Kyle graciously took the team, and vows to beat anyone who still calls him a dummy. Running a squad that was created after the top 45 players in the league are gone is no easy task, but Kyle from Sycamoreland is up for it.

We are playing a head-to-head format, with a “week” consisting of two league games, regardless of when they are played. We have a nice mix of guys from around the league, and six of the conference’s schools are represented. An owner gets a category “win” for the week by beating his opponent in each category. For example, in week 1, my team had four blocked shots for the week. Kyle “Dummy” had seven blocks. Kyle wins the category for the week. There are seven scoring categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, three-pointers made, and fewest turnovers.

There are still a few teams without team names, so for the time being, teams will be referred to by the name of their owner.

Here are the results from Week 1:

JT def. Danny 5-2 – Jon Ekey (24 points, 26 rebounds) and Seth Tuttle (22 points, 17 rebounds) helped JT to a win over a tough opponent

Joe def. Kyle 5-2 – Joe survived the challenge from the “dummy” team thanks in part to Mamadou Seck (29 points, 17 rebounds)

JD def. Jeremiah 6-1 – Kyle Weems (53 points, 16 rebounds) carried JD to a dominant win

Heath def. Chris 6-0-1 – Jackie Carmichael (27 points, 5 blocks) pushed Heath to a near sweep

Jaden def. Tim 7-0 – Jaden dominated all categories behind Colt Ryan (54 points, 7 three-pointers) and Carl Hall (27 points, 21 rebounds)

Following next week, the update article will include standings and top performers.

Stay tuned – eight weeks to go! Can anyone stop Jaden? Will the boys from Bluejay Banter step up? Will Kyle shed the dummy tag and pick up a victory?
