Missouri Tartan Days brings Scottish heritage to St. Charles next weekend

Missouri Tartan Day is a Scottish heritage ever that has been held in April for the past 13 years. This year's event on April 4-6 will include more of the popular activities that draws 30,000 to 40,000 visitors to the St. Charles Riverfront every spring.

The event at Frontier Park includes cultural dancing, storytelling, foods, crafts, athletics, and…of course…bagpipes.

Also, brawny men (and women) will heave, throw, and toss various items weighing from 16 pounds to well over 100 pounds. One of those objects is a trimmed tree trunk 16-22 feet long and weighing 100-180 pounds. The goal of this caber toss is to toss and flip the log so a point on one end lands in 12-o'clock position to the competitor.

Tartan Days events are held around the country each year. The celebration remembers the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath, which was a declaration of independence from English rule. The signing was held on April 6, 1320.

The 2014 event includes bagpipe bands, Highland dancing, storytelling, and multiple bands including the Scottish rock band, Mother Grove.

All Tartan Day events are free and family friendly. Daily hours are 5-10pm on Friday, 9:30am to 10pm on Saturday, and 10am to 5pm on Sunday.
