Mississippi Storm History: What happened on this date (November 7)

As a part of Tornado Awareness Month, the Jackson Weather Examiner will review severe storms that affected the state throughout the month of November.

On this date -November 7th:

In 1957, 4 tornadoes touched down across the state.  A F-3 tore a 5 mile path across Holmes County, killing 2 people and another F-3 tornado tracked 26 miles across Carroll County, injuring 1 person.  Two other tornadoes (F-1s) touched down in Claiborne and Winston Counties.


In 1996, High winds along with 2 tornadoes were reported across the state.  

A weak tornado first touched down in Simpson County and then moved into Smith County. The total length of the tornado was 13 miles long. Several mobile homes were damaged along the path of the tornado along with numerous trees blown down. Two elderly people were injured when the tornado blew over their mobile home.

Several motorists reported a northward moving tornado touched down briefly near the Interstate Highway 10 exit at Kiln in Hancock County. (No damage reported)

Notable wind damage:

  • Several barns were damaged in Noxubee County
  • Sheriff's Office reported trees downed damaging an automobile, a barn and a few mobile homes in Hancock County
  • Several homes were damaged. A restaurant lost part of its roof. A trailer was damaged. Several trees and power lines were knocked down in Panola
  • A 10'x50' section of a roof was blown off in a shopping center. Several 6" tree limbs were broken off and a trailer was overturned in De Soto County
  • A barn was damaged southwest of the city of Senatobia. A silo was badly damaged east of Senatobia. Several power poles were knocked down between Senatobia and Independence. A church lost part of its steeple. The wind blew into a school cafeteria knocking some ceiling tiles down. One cafeteria worker was injured by the falling tiles. (Tate County)
  • The roofs of two buildings were torn off. The shingles of many buildings were blown off. Numerous trees and power lines were blown down. The winds were estimated at over 70 mph in Humphreys County
  • Several cotton trailers were blown over in Holmes County
  • Ten houses and mobile homes were damaged or destroyed. One person was injured when a tree fell across her mobile home. Numerous trees were blown down. Wind speeds were estimated to be in excess of 70 mph in Adams County
  • An 18-wheeler was blown over injuring the driver in Lee County
