As a part of Tornado Awareness Month, the Jackson Weather Examiner will review severe storms that affected the state throughout the month of November.
On this date -November 23rd:
This date was dominated by high winds with only 2 tornadoes reported.
In 1983, high winds were reported in several counties. One inch hail was reported in Lowndes County.
In 2003, high winds over 50 mph swept across Madison County, downing many large limbs and trees.
In 2004, high winds of 60 to near 100 mph swept across several counties with 2 confirmed tornadoes. One person was injured in Pontotoc County, after high winds knocked a house 12 feet off of its foundation.
A long tracked (18 miles) 600 yards wide, F-3 tornado tore across Jefferson County, downing and snapping numerous trees and power lines, destroying a large tractor shed, severely damaging 4 house roofs, and causing minor damage to a mobile home and two sheds. This tornado caused an estimated $300,000 in property damage.
Notable Wind Damage:
- Three mobile homes were damaged. Several houses were damaged by falling trees. Numerous trees were blown down in Pontotoc County.
- A mobile home was destroyed as it was moved 20 feet from its foundation and a small shed was destroyed. A gas station also sustained major damage as a large portion of the roof was blown off and the rest the building was heavily damaged in Washington County.
- One business had huge areas of its roof torn off. The dugout at the Bruce High School baseball field was severely damaged with its roof blown off and numerous concrete blocks blown off in Calhoun County.
- One of numerous trees fell on a car and destroyed a porch to a house in Grenada County.
- One mobile home was destroyed in Lee County.
