Mississippi Storm History: What happened on this date (November 16)

As a part of Tornado Awareness Month, the Jackson Weather Examiner will review severe storms that affected the state throughout the month of November.

On this date -November 16th:

In 1987, a significant severe weather outbreak unfolded across the state with over 20 tornadoes reported with widespread high winds.  Seven people were injured.

A 150 yard wide,  F-2 tornado touched down and tracked 16 miles across Lincoln County, producing $250,000 in property damage.  Two people were injured.

Five people were injured, when a F-2 tornado tracked 6 miles across Rankin County, producing over 2.5 million dollars in damage.

In addition to the F-2 tornado in Yazoo County, large hail up to 1.75 inches in diameter was reported.

Several counties reported multiple tornadoes: 4 tornadoes in Rankin, 2 tornadoes in Montgomery, 2 tornadoes in Franklin, and 2 tornadoes in Hinds.

  • All of the tornadoes were ranked either F-1s or F-2s in strength.  

  • The longest tracked tornado was confirmed in Simpson County with a track up to 20 miles. (F-2 tornado)
  • The widest tornado or tornadoes reported and or confirmed were 150 yard wide F-2 tornadoes in Copiah, Lincoln and Rankin Counties.

In 1993, an 100 yard wide, F-1 tornado tracked 5 miles through Amite County.  Three people were injured when the tornado rolled their mobile home. A large gas tank was turned over and a hay barn was destroyed. Many trees and power lines were blown down. 

Notable Wind Damage:

  • The wall on an apartment building was blown down in Warren County
  • The roof of a mobile home was blown off in Alcorn County

Tornado Counties: Adams, Amite, Attala, Copiah, Franklin, Hancock, Hinds, Lincoln, Madison, Montgomery, Newton, Rankin, Simpson, Smith, Wilkinson, Yazoo

Damaging Wind Counties: Alcorn, Calhoun, Carroll, Chickasaw, Claiborne, Grenada, Issaquena, Itawamba, Lafayette, Leake, Lee, Monroe, Neshoba, Pike, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Scott, Sharkey, Union, Warren, Winston
