Mississippi's Mee Sen for what ails (Photos)

From across the street the glow of Mee Sen's interior beckons Portland’s passersby. The dim lighting offset by brilliantly colored strung lights is instantly warming to guests, the speakers overhead lightly hum everything from Wu Tang to Jimi Hendrix, and the low bench style seating at rustic wooden tables feels cozy, modern, and casual.

Recycled bourbon bottles serve as water pitchers for the table, and a small bar lines the back wall providing the perfect observation point for those wanting to watch the kitchen do its thing.

Located on NE Mississippi, Mee Sen is packed with guests craving the comforts of Southeast Asian cuisine. Upon opening the menu it becomes apparent that this Thai eatery works to offer their guests a more authentic version of the dishes they have grown to love, while still featuring tempting new dishes that will make straying from Pad Thai an easy choice.

Recommendation number one: A curry noodle soup called Khoa Soi Gai #24. Labeled as their “most popular dish” its popularity is perhaps because of the user friendly and familiar ingredients. Yellow curry, a perfectly stewed chicken leg, and egg noodles both crispy and soft. Simple, sweet, spicy, and addicting.

Recommendation number two: Khao Mon Gai Yang #17. This dish is a Bangkok street food favorite that serves up Thai-style BBQ game hen, spicy green papaya salad, jasmine rice, and a sweet chili dipping sauce.

The menu is mouthwatering. Pair any dish with a Thai iced tea, chilly Singha, or one of their handcrafted cocktails. Enjoy!
