The Mississippi Development Authority announced today that the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, a PGA Champions Tour event played at beautiful Fallen Oak in Saucier will add C Spire Wireless is the new presenting sponsor and 14 other consortium partners from the Mississippi Gulf Coast region.
For the annual PGA Tour stop in the Jackson area, Sanderson Farms renewed its sponsorship for the popular event at Annandale Golf Club in Madison through the year 2016. Now known as The Sanderson Farms Championship, the former True South Classic and Viking Classic, will move from the summer months to the more mild temperatures at the beginning of the 2014-2015 PGA Tour schedule in October.
The event will increase its prize money to $4 million and should attract many of the world's best players.
“Mississippi has long been affiliated with professional golf and is pleased to continue providing in-depth exposure for our great state and all it offers guests, residents and businesses," stated Mississippi Tourism Director Malcolm White. “Icing on the cake is the enormous local charitable support these PGA TOUR events drive while showcasing our natural beauty, True South culture and hospitality, and our world-class casino resorts and golf courses.”
Both C Spire Wireless and Sanderson Farms are successful Mississippi companies.
The MDA says these two week-long PGA Tour events have a huge economic impact on the state.
In a study conducted by the MDA, the tournament’s economic impact to the state in 2010 was $22 million. The Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic – which will next be held March 17-23, 2014 – has generated more than $55 million for the regional economy and over $750,000 for local non-profit community charities.

Hotels and resorts have been built and are expanding because of golf.
