Mississippi animal shelters - a way to find a pet a good home

After the decision is made if one is ready for a pet, that is if one has a proper home, family acceptance, finances, space, knowledge of caring for a pet, then finding a pet is step 2.

Find and adopt a pet.

Mississippi Animal Shelters house animals that are:

* strays
* given away when an owner has passed away
* from humane organizations and animal control agencies
* owned by owners who can no longer care for their pets

When animals are taken in, they rarely have a medical history. If there is one available that indicates medical aid or veterinary care has been given; this information is passed on to the new owner. The Animal Shelter cannot guarantee the health or temperament of an animal adopted from the Shelter.

In order to adopt from a Mississippi Animal Shelter one will need a Drivers License or photo ID and must be at least 18 years of age.  One such shelter is the Community Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA) shelter in Jackson, MS.

Abbott, immediately above, was found abandoned at a baseball field with his companion, Costello, the Chihuahua. He's very attached to his little friend. We would love to see them find a home together. Abbott will be a good size boy, probably at least 50 lbs. He's doing well with his crate and leash training.

Also, a reminder of the August 29th BBQ Benefit for CARA.

Shelters recommend allowing at least 30 minutes to visit a shelter in order to view the animals and get acquainted with the pets who are available for adoption. If one does not find what they are looking for, a wish list is sometimes maintained at the front desk, so be sure to check with the receptionist.

Even though shelters are located in Mississippi, among other states, one can "shop" for a pet online as well.   Oprah adopted all her pets from a shelter.  There's even a charm school for dogs in Mississippi!
