Mississippi among several states under winter storm states of emergency

An evolving winter storm has prompted governors in several states across the Deep South to issue emergencies ahead of the storm.

A state of emergency was declared for Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia, which is the second time in two weeks that these states have been under an emergency due to winter weather.

“I have declared a State of Emergency to aid emergency officials in preparing for the onset of this potentially dangerous weather,” Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said.

“Mississippi has seen its share of winter weather lately, but now is not the time to become weather weary. Residents should not overreact but should make plans now to ensure they are prepared for a variety of conditions, including prolonged freezing temperatures, icy roadways and accumulations of ice and winter precipitation,” Bryant added.

The declaration is an administrative tool that allows state officials to position and deploy resources to assist areas that are impacted by an emergency.

Residents should prepare for the possibility of power outages and very dangerous driving conditions with significant accumulations of snow, sleet and ice expected across parts of the region.

The worst conditions are forecast to evolve over Georgia and South Carolina on Wednesday with major ice accumulations on trees and power lines of one-half to more than one-inch, according to the National Weather Service.

Motorists are encouraged not to do any unnecessary travel.
