It has been a busy week for music news: concert announcements, new albums, new videos, postponements, and more. Here are some items that you may have missed...
First Fleet Concerts announced that Napalm Death would be coming to Wooly's in Des Moines. The grindcore legends will play a 7 p.m. show at the East Village venue on May 27. No opening bands have been announced at this time. Tickets for the concert will be $15 in advance and $18 the day of the show. They may be purchased starting tomorrow at 10 a.m. through the Wooly's box office or online through Ticketfly. This will be an all ages show.
First Fleet also announced today that the blues band 4onthefloor will play Wooly's on March 29 at 8 p.m. The show will be a 16-and-over event, and tickets will go on sale at the Wooly's box office and online through Ticketfly at 10 a.m. tomorrow for $8.
Wooly's has also booked Des Moines indie group Lesson7 for a show on March 8 at 9 p.m. Opening the show will be Mike Borgia, Angry Chair, and HE(C.U.)LL. Tickets for the 21-and-over show will be $10 through the Wooly's box office and Ticketfly.
The Mission Creek Festival, one of Iowa's biggest music and arts festivals, announced more musical acts for the 2013 event this week. The festival, which features a number of Central Iowa bands, added Divine Fits, Pallbearer, Jeff the Brotherhood, Mister Lies, Pete Swanson, and a number of other acts to a lineup that already featured Iris Dement, Grizzly Bear, Tig Notaro, Gloom Balloon, Love Songs for Lonely Monsters, Mumford's, No Coast, The Pines, and a whole lot more. For the full lineup, visit the Mission Creek website. This year's festival will be held April 2 through April 7 in Downtown Iowa City.
Mumford's trombone player Paul Hertz was scheduled to play an organ recital on January 27 at the Saint Petri Lutheran Church (804 Grand Avenue) in Story City. That concert had to be cancelled due to bad weather. That recital has been rescheduled for Sunday, February 10 at 3 p.m.
Des Moines-based alternative artist Unknown Component (Keith Lynch) has released a new video from his 2012 album Blood v. Electricity. You can check out "For All Intents & Purposes" in the nearby video box, and Blood v. Electricity can streamed and purchased through the Unknown Component website.
Tenor saxophonist Jack Wilkins will be performing at Drake University's Turner Jazz Center on Saturday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the all ages performance are $7 for students and $15 for the general public. They may be purchased online through MidwesTix.
Christopher the Conquered's Chris Ford has begun a new YouTube series called "Christopher the Conquered Sings". Ford's series will feature him playing selected cover songs on the piano. Ames' Nate Logsdon (of Mumford's) and Iowa City singer/songwriter Brooks Strause will be hitting the road together starting later this month to tour the Midwest in support of their respective new albums. Logsdon's Bad Decisions is available now on Maximum Ames Records. Strause's Acid Casual is due out soon.
Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines has added a number of new concerts to their schedule. The pop punk band Forever Came Calling will headline the venue on March 26. Tickets for the 4:30 p.m. all ages show will be $12 at the door. Openers will include: Heart to Heart, Last Call, The Survival Soundtrack, Street Thieves, and Stoopid.
Doom metal band Mutilation Rites will play the Mews on April 1. The 9 p.m. show will be 21-and-older and will be $10 at the door. Inter Arma will open.
Alt-rockers Detective will take the Mews stage on April 2. The 8 p.m. show has no openers scheduled yet. It will be a 21-and-over show with an $8 cover charge.
Talking Heads tribute band This Must Be the Band will play Vaudeville Mews on April 4. Grood will open the 9 p.m. show. Tickets for the 21-and-over show will be $8 in advance through Tikly or $10 at the door.
Finally, the Des Moines Social Club announced that the Celtic folk duo Four Shillings Short will play at the DMSC's current home in the Kirkwood Building (400 Walnut Street, Des Moines) on March 16 at 7:30 p.m. There will be a $10 cover charge at the door.
