Today (May 5) is Cinco de Mayo! The holiday commemorates the victory of the Mexican army over the French at the Battle of Puebla on this day back in 1862, but on this side of the border it means a whole lot of margaritas and Mexican food are consumed! There is no shortage of Mexican food in Mission Beach, but La Playa Taco Shop and Gringo's are my picks for where to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Mission Beach.
La Playa
You can't miss La Playa when driving down Mission Blvd., as this hole-in-the-wall eatery is painted a bright orange hue. The family owned and operated taquería serves up mouth-watering Mexican dishes like Carnitas Tacos and Chicken Enchiladas. I can't think of a better way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo than by indulging in some La Playa washed down with Horchata, the traditional sweet Mexican drink.
For more info: Visit La Playa Taco Shop at 3973 Mission Blvd. in Mission Beach or call (858) 488-7405. Open Monday - Saturday: 8:30am - 8:30pm. Sunday 8:30am - 7:30pm.
Gringo's Cocina Y Cantina
As delicious as Horchata may be, some of you might want to treat yourself to a giant margarita this Cinco de Mayo. The best place to do so off Mission Blvd. is Gringo's Cocina Y Cantina. Gringo's offers tons of margaritas to choose from (try to Patron Silver, 100% agave nectar, fresh limes and a splash of Grand Marnier) in addition to an array of Mexican beers. Although Gringo's has a full dinner menu with items ranging from fajitas to salads, I often fill up on their chips and queso dip!
For more info: Visit Gringo's Cocina Y Cantina at 4474 Mission Blvd. or call (858) 490-2877.
