MISSION BBQ is back! The fast casual restaurant known for its traditional American BBQ and dedication to honoring our service men and women, returns to Maryland with the opening of its Columbia restaurant. Co-founders and Howard County residents Bill Kraus and Steve Newton are thrilled to be smoking and serving traditional BBQ favorites with a side of patriotism to their hometown community.
“After opening locations in Richmond, Va. and Wilmington, N.C, we are excited to be back home in Maryland,” says co-founder Bill Kraus. “We consider it a great privilege to be in a position to give back to the local police and fire departments in our community, as well as the men and women sacrificing everyday for our freedoms and protecting this great country.”
As is tradition with the opening of every MISSION BBQ, the new location hosted charity nights throughout the week leading up to today’s grand opening, with proceeds going to local police and fire departments in Howard County, as well as the Wounded Warrior Project.
Howard County residents will now experience traditional favorites done the MISSON BBQ way, such as Texas Inspired Beef Brisket; Jalapeño and Cheese Sausage; North Carolina Pull Pork Sandwiches; and MISSION BBQ’s ode to Maryland, Bay-B-Back Ribs sprinkled with Old Bay seasoning. All sides are made-from-scratch and include Maggie’s Mac-N-Cheese; Baked Beans & Brisket; Green Beans & Bacon; and Fresh Cut Fries. Desserts change seasonally and consist of an assortment of homemade southern sweets.
MISSON BBQ currently has eight restaurants in four states, including Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina. The opening of the Columbia location is part of MISSON BBQ’s vast expansion plan, with a targeted goal of 40 restaurants throughout the East Coast by 2018.

MISSION BBQ first opened its doors on September 11, 2011, on the tenth anniversary of the day that changed the world forever. Owners Bill Kraus and Steve Newton opened the restaurant with a mission to give back to local community and American Heroes, who protect, serve and save. They traveled across the country, from Texas to Kansas City, to the Carolinas and St. Louis to master America’s greatest contribution to culinary arts: BBQ! A few favorite menu items include Bay-B-Back Ribs; North Carolina Pulled Pork; and Jalapeno and Cheese Sausage. Each MISSION BBQ location supports and donates proceeds to numerous military charities including the Wounded Warrior Project, USO, Toys for Tots and the Honor Flight Network, as well as the many local police, fire and first responder charities in each of their communities. Every day, at exactly 12 noon, the entire restaurant halts to honor our country by saluting the flag, standing at attention and singing our National Anthem. MISSION BBQ offers customized catering for parties of all sizes, small and large, and has an authentic deuce and half military truck outfitted with a fully operational smoker that can roll in and feed your army.
