It's a profile, like all the others on the online dating site. But as NYPD Detective Kat Donovan focuses on the accompanying picture, she feels her whole world explode, as emotions she’s ignored for decades come crashing down on her. Staring back at her is her ex-fiancé Jeff, the man who shattered her heart—and who she hasn’t seen in 18 years.
Kat feels a spark, wondering if this might be the moment when past tragedies recede and a new world opens up to her. But when she reaches out to the man in the profile, her reawakened hope quickly darkens into suspicion and then terror as an unspeakable conspiracy comes to light, in which monsters prey upon the most vulnerable.
Though the mystery is fictional, true crime murders have occurred on the internet. Illicit love affairs, sexual liaisons and fantasies have revealed people who have lied about themselves; adding more mystery including their age, occupation and pictures on the internet that may not be theirs.
Coben was recently on the CBS morning show “CBS This Morning” talking about his novel and through his research went online exposed as a young woman looking for an older woman. He also answered co-anchor Norah O’Donnell’s question as to what is a good thriller. Coben stated it starts with the first sentence along with other features to make it a success.
Coben has sold 60 million copies of his mystery/thriller novels worldwide. The video of his talk on CBS can be seen below.
