John Adams, 67, of New York disappeared without a trace on July 4th. Authorities and the family could find no leads to where he went until the police looked at video tape of the area around a trash compactor at the Niagara Center in downtown Niagara Falls where John worked as a maintenance worker.
It showed John climbing into the trash compactor to get a smaller trash can that he had dropped and was crushed to death, WLBW-TV reports.
"The question is why it took so long to look at those tapes. That is the question. If they had looked at those tapes, we never would have had to go this far to know my brother was in that dumpster," said Evie Shepherd, John's sister.
The Niagara Falls Police did search the trash container after John disappeared, but no remains were found. Now they believe that the remains were so compacted they were not seen.
"We didn't think the video would provide much as there was no indication there was remains in the trash as that's how the compacting system works," said Paul Grenga, Niagara Center Attorney.
Because the trash compactor has been sent out to be incinerated, the remains are long gone.
"We have no idea where his remains are," said Evie.
