Missing Malaysia Airlines plane: Craziest theories about what happened to MH370

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 went missing on March 8. Nearly two weeks later, all kinds of theories have been offered as to what might have happened to the plane on its way to Beijing, China. Most theories attempting to explain the ongoing mystery revolve around extremely plausible scenarios -- a crash due to mechanical failure or pilot suicide, a terrorist bombing, and/or a hijacking. Of course, a hijacking could have also resulted in the Boeing 777 and its 239 passengers and crew being flown to an as yet unknown destination -- as could an act of piracy. But besides the possible and plausible, there have been a number of theories presented that simply stretch the bounds of credulity.

The Independent listed some crazy theories March 17 and they happen to be outlandish, to say the least, starting with the first.

The Bermuda Triangle (sort of): A Bermuda Triangle-like effect caused the plane to vanish. This theory was proposed by a Malaysian politician who apparently decided that the Bermuda Triangle was transferrable when he tweeted (via Yahoo News): "New Bermuda Triangle detected in Vietnam waters, well-equipped sophisticated devices are of no use!" (There was also Facebook postings stating MH370 had been found in the Bermuda Triangle itself, but that turned out to be the work of hoaxers and hackers.)

UFO and/or Alien Abduction: This idea was picked up by Forbidden Knowledge TV, a website dedicated to the "outing" of unreported and underreported extraterrestrial activity. Pointing to YouTube user DAHBOO7's video, Alexandra Bruce of FKTV claims radar readings in the clip “captured signals from what for now, can only be termed a UFO”. UFO experts later acknowledged that there was no credible UFO activity in the area when the plane vanished but the possible involvement of a UFO could not be ruled out.

Edward Snowden: American national secrets leaker Edward Snowden sits in the center of a conspiracy theory that suggests that the plane disappeared because of a bunch of IT guys on Flight MH370. According to Reddit user Dark_Spectre, American authorities might have disappeared the plane to gain control of several employees of Freescale Semiconductor. Dark_Spectre contends that American operatives could have "sanitized" the plane to keep the Chinese from getting to the techies. The Snowden connection? Another passenger on the plane is apparently an executive at IBM, a company Snowden implicated in his information leaks as working with the National Security Agency while they surveilled China.

North Korea hijacking. Of all the hijacking scenarios, perhaps the one that has garnered the most interest is the one regarding North Korea as the culprit. What North Korea could possibly gain from such a hijacking is in itself a mystery. This theory was credited to another Reddit user, nickryane, who pointed out that it had happened once before in 1969.

China scapegoat theory: The Guardian reported that Media mogul Rupert Murdoch went on a Twitter spree last week with a few of his tweets regarding his thoughts on the missing Malaysia Airlines plane. In one, he suggested the United States befriend China against the Russians because it looked as if China was being set up by "jihadists." He wrote: "777crash confirms jihadists turning to make trouble for China. Chance for US to make common cause, befriend China while Russia bullies."

The Illuminati theory: In a list compiled by the Boston Globe, the staff there found a theory pointing toward the elusive Illuninati as culprits in the plane's disappearance. And they found the connection via Wikipedia, no less. To bolster this theory, the proposer, Redditor user Redditor i-am-SHER-locked noted: “Was looking at the Wikipedia page for the missing Malaysia Airlines, and noticed that it's was [sic] the 404th 777 Boeing produced. An HTTP 404 error mean [sic] not found, which in this case is oddly approiate [sic] for the status of the aircraft, or just a concidence [sic]. Coincidence, i think not!”

Black Hole: On the Twitter account of @Angela_Stalcup, there are quite a few conspiracy theories, including one that claims that Russian president Vladimir Putin is one of 90 Adolf Hitler clones. Also, concerning missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370: "The Malaysia Airlines Jet was blown up by a micro nuclear bomb which created a black hole of magnetic forces vaporizing the whole jetliner." There is also a tie-in with the aforementioned tech company Freescale Semiconductor in a later tweet: "Obama Administration is very pleased with Freescale Malaysia Airlines 777 stealth technologies having penetrated all the Asian air defenses."

Regardless of whether or not a theory is plausible or unbelievable, the fact remains that Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 went missing on March 8. Although at first thought to have gone down somewhere over the South China Sea because all contact with the plane had been suddenly lost, it was later discovered that not only had the plane made a turn, it had also been picked up by military radar off the west coast of Malaysia, hundreds of miles west of the location where contact originally had been lost. Further signals were detected via satellite for a few more hours, prompting Malaysian officials to note that the flight path and altitude (it was reportedly flying very low, perhaps to avoid radar) were consistent with deliberate actions. Although this appeared to bolster the hijacking/terrorist/piracy theories, it in no way confirmed them.

The Boeing 777 and its 239 passengers and crew remain missing.
