Missed UFO experience? Sound was enough to 'wake the dead'

Terror is something we try to avoid. And while getting close to what you think is an alien spacecraft might sound exciting - I recommend you back off.

Take the case of a New Mexico radio reporter.

A co-worker mentioned a UFO sighting and got a little razzing in the news room. But one of the teasers might be taking the subject of UFOs a bit more seriously these days after an experience at home a few days later that has no ending.

The reporter woke up in bed when he was awakened by "an extremely loud, sustained whooshing sound" over his home.

"This was a sound loud enough to wake the dead," the witness stated.

First he attempted to rule out what the sound was not.

"It was not moving like perhaps a low flying jet from Kirtland Air Force Base with the after-burners engaged. It was not whomping and buzzing, like the blades of a circling helicopter, nor was it the sound of a helicopter hovering in stealth mode where the sound is suppressed."

The sound was so loud, that he was afraid to go outside and look - or even look out the window to see what might be making the noise.

"It was like the Space Shuttle was taking off right outside my window. In fact, I was surprised my wife and daughter weren't disturbed by it, even though they're very sound sleepers. As I look back on it now, I am surprised the dog wasn't awake and barking. It was so loud and steady, I was afraid to look out the windows or go outside to see what it was. I lay in bed too terrified to move. The sound continued for what must have been 10-30 minutes or more, and then suddenly decreased in volume and was gone."

Could the sound have come from a nearby factory?

"My first thought after it was over was that a factory nearby was releasing some kind of gas pressure, because it slowly settled to a slight hissing sound and was gone. Looking back I remember there was no light outside, like the searchlight from a police copter. If it was a factory, why haven't I heard it before, and why have I not heard it again? I wish I had been more courageous and gone outside to look."

Mystery is sometimes best left alone. While we have no ending to this story, it's a good time to remind folks in an actual UFO sighting situation, to look after your well being first. Watching what appears to be an anomalous craft from a long distance is one thing, but if the craft is less than 500 feet from your location - map out your escape strategy before further investigation. There are many cases from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database from this past year alone where people attempted to get the attention of the UFO, and the craft moved in for a close inspection.

Moving indoors is generally a good precaution. If you are out and about in nature, look for ways to hide yourself in forest or other vegetation. If you spot any type of light beam moving from the craft to the ground - move away from the beam.

While capturing a UFO on a digital photo or video might be a courageous opportunity, please look after yourself first - and take the images once you feel safe.

The following story could have had many endings - but the witness made the decision to stay inside and not investigate. It could have been something very manmade or natural happening, or it could have something anomalous. We now may never know.

The following is the unedited and as yet uninvestigated report filed with MUFON. Please keep in mind that most UFO reports can be explained as something natural or man made. If New Mexico MUFON State Director Donald R. Burleson, Ph.D. investigates and reports back on this case, I will release an update. Please report UFO activity to MUFON.com.

NM, May 2010 - loud non-moving whooshing sound over my house. MUFON Case # 25843.

I am reporter for radio station KKOB in Albuquerque. This incident took place about 72 hours after having a discussion in the news room about a sighting one of my co-workers mentioned happened near his house out in the Bernalillo area. We joked about it. I remember going to the MUFON website to see if there were any reports on it as we talked. There weren't. My boss and I teased him gently, and he joined in the fun. He wasn't upset by us. He was curious about it that's all. We all talked about the story of the century and such, asked if anyone landed and got out, had he been drinking, you know, the normal B.S.ing guys do, and then we all got back to work. About two or three nights later,

I was asleep in bed when I was awakened by an extremely loud, sustained whooshing sound over my house.

It was not moving like perhaps a low flying jet from Kirtland Air Force Base with the after-burners engaged. It was not whomping and buzzing, like the blades of a circling helicopter, nor was it the sound of a helicopter hovering in stealth mode where the sound is suppressed.

This was a sound loud enough to wake the dead!

It was like the Space Shuttle was taking off right outside my window.

The sound continued for what must have been 10-30 minutes or more, and then suddenly decreased in volume and was gone.

Being a radio news reporter, I am familiar with those sights and sounds. This was something I've never heard before, or since. I talked with Mark Easter by telephone today,(10-12-2010), because it keeps nagging at me,"What the hell was THAT!?" He urged me to make a report, so here it is. If it WAS a factory, why haven't I heard it before, and why have I not heard it again? I wish I had been more courageous and gone outside to look.

You know what despite all that you wrote about being cautious, I would have looked. I also doubt that my first thought would have been a ufo.
I know that I would not have gone outside, but I would have looked out the window or at least tried to wake up my husband? I am not particularly brave either, but you need time to decide whether to fight or flee or to do nothing?
A while back when I was a counselor at a girls scout camp, a bunch of city girls were woken up by a "ghostly horse", galloping down the old logging trail nearby. It apparently let out a ghastly whistling neighing sound. Not one of them looked!!! As a country kid, I can kind of guess already that it was a deer or even someone's horse had gotten loose, but to huddle up with your sleeping bag over your head seems foolish, what if it was a dangerous animal or something that you need to fight or flee from?

It is easy for us to say I would have looked or found the sorce, but we don't really know until we are in the situation. I hope to heck that I would be brave enough to peek out the window, but fear is a mighty thing and can freeze one to the bed. At least he shared the experience with us and I am glad for that

Grizzy: I have a great story about how I "didn't look" during what I later perceived to be a Bigfoot encounter. To this day, I am pissed I didn't pull that curtain back and look - but I was too afraid at the time. All the signs were there - and I chose "not to look."

I had a very similar experience at my home about 10 years ago. I had a long telephone conversation about it with Brian Vike. The sound was so loud it was shaking the house! It sounded like a hovering Harrier jump jet.
I looked out the window but couldn't see directly above the house. My guard dog was under the bed.
There's no way I was going outside! I am a 6', 235 lb former Army Infantryman. If you think you would have gone outside at the time you're kidding yourself.
    Smart dog.

I was using a dog whistle on my iPhone last night because i live in a relatively open area and heard rustling while I was out smoking. I had been observing an odd star object that looked to be very close in distance. Well long story short I saw a light pulsing moving toward me in the sky above the tree line. I'm wondering if the object detected the high frequency sound of the dog whistle.

Wow, I really wish I could have found this sooner. Ive been looking for something about this mysterious sound I heard, also, in the same area as mentioned in this article. It was loud enough to embed itself into my dreams that night, which is why I had gotten up to figure out where this sound was coming from (but I did not dare go outside, I just stood next to the window). It was like a metallic, whirring sound; it was just very haunting. I still cant get it out of my head till this day.
