It is hard to understand why Obama missed the opportunity to celebrate VT day or Victory day over terrorism. Why when he made his speech last week at the National Defense University informing us that since personally killing Osama the war on terror is over, why didn’t he issue an executive order celebrating our victory. At the end of World War two we had VE day (Victory in Europe) and VJ day (Victory in Japan). Who wouldn’t want to head down to Times Square now that it is safe and lock lips with some pretty nurses?
Could it be that Obama is shy and doesn’t like public parties? Sure he likes to invite his friends and even the press for private parties but as evidenced by canceling White House tours and even Fleet Week it would seem he does not like to mingle with the masses. Possibly it is because the war on terror is a different type of war and doesn’t deserve its own V day.
Had Obama and his administration been in charge in 1941 would we have earned any victory days by 1945? After the attack at Pearl Harbor (fewer casualties that WTC) what would Obama’s response have been? Would his address to the nation have blamed it on Orson Welles and his “War of the Worlds” broadcast? Or would the blame be placed on a few radical Japanese whose religion tells them their emperor is a god? We can be sure declaring war on Nazi Germany was out since those former colonial powers deserve what is happening to them after trying to civilize the third world.
No the presidential address to Congress on December 8 1941 would have sounded quite different from FDR’s. First Obama’s would apologize to the Japanese people for heightening tensions by having Pearl Harbor so close to their sphere in influence and pledge to pull our fleet back to San Diego. Then in an effort to understand our enemies a new Japanese outreach department would be formed to study ways we can prevent further offending the Japanese people. Some of the recommendations could be ordering MacArthur to advise the Japanese troops in the Philippines on conflict resolution. Opening up centers across the country called Military Outreach Supporting Quasi Understanding of our Enemies or MOSQUE’s to reach out to our brothers in the orient. We could teach them American military tactics to show them we mean no harm. We could even show them how to integrate gays and women into the military.
Yes the world would be a different place if Obama was in charge in 1941. Just think of all the tax dollars that could have been better spent on the poor and illegal immigrants rather than freeing the world. Even the word poor might have been dropped from popular culture like responsibility, valor, and freedom have.
No use dwelling on the past we must keep moving forward. During his first four years Obama has defeated terrorism, fixed health care, ended unemployment, and turned the economy around. With only four more short years there is no time to waste. Now he must work on making sure no one is inconvenienced by bad weather caused by global warming, insuring illegal aliens don’t feel bad by making them citizens, and continue the quest to make sure everyone pays a fair share. Now that’s change we can believe in.
