Miss Washington wins preliminary swimsuit competition (Photos)

Miss Washington 2012 Mandy Schendel won a $1,000 college scholarship Thursday as the third winner in the Miss America swimsuit competition.

Thursday’s event marked the final preliminary competition in the Miss America Pageant. A new Miss America will be crowned Saturday in Las Vegas. The final night will be broadcast live on the ABC television network.

Schendel joins the swimsuit winners’ circle that also includes Miss Illinois 2012 Megan Ervin, who won on Wednesday, and Miss South Carolina 2012 Ali Rogers, who won on Tuesday.

Schendel, 22, is a resident of Newcastle, Wash.

She is a graduate of Hazen High School who has attended Azusa Pacific University.

Her goal is to earn a degree in law and, ultimately, serve on the United States Supreme Court.

Her personal pageant platform is, “Do Something: Enrich Youth, Cultivating Leaders.”

"This year is sure to be spectacular," she wrote after she was crowned Miss Washington in July. "I will be your travel guide throughout the year to show off the best parts of Washington State and the Miss Washington Scholarship Organization."

If Schendel is named Miss America on Saturday, she will become the first Miss Washington to wear the national crown.
