Miss Spain Patricia Yurena Rodriguez is the first national beauty queen to publicly come out as a lesbian reported E! Monday. The two-time 24-year-old Spanish beauty queen winner recently shared a very intimate photo of herself lying underneath her girlfriend Vanessa to announce her sexuality, which has received over 8,200 likes and counting.
Last week Patricia Yurena Rodriguez posted a photo on Instagram captioned with, “Romea and Juliet” to inform the public she is in a relationship with a musician/DJ that happens to also be a woman. According to the Costa Rican newspaper La Nacion the couple met through friends last year shortly before the controversial Miss Universe Pageant 2013, which banned “gay propaganda among minors.” Vanessa Cortes and Miss Spain have been dating for a few months.
Miss Spain followed up with another Instagram post, “Gracias a todos por vuestros comentarios,” which when translated means, “Thanks to all for your comments,” and Patricia Yurena Rodriguez captioned the hearts and kisses with “for the outpouring of support and even more to rejoice in my happiness.” Miss Spain defended her decision to post the photo announcing her sexuality in a Spanish newspaper and stated, "I don't regret what I did, and I did it because I'm happy about what's going on in my life."
Patricia Yurena Rodriquez is not only the first openly gay Spanish national beauty queen, but also the first to win the title twice in her country, originally in 2008 and then again in 2013. Miss Spain was a top 15 semifinalist in the Miss World 2008 competition, and was Miss Universe 2013 first runner-up, losing to Miss Venezuela, Gabriela Isler.
