From the beginning of the controversy surrounding Carrie Prejean back in 2009 there were those, like the staff of Modest Clothing Distributors who worried that the Christian community was hitching itself to the wrong horse. Carrie Prejean may be a Christian, and she may be attempting to conform her life to the principles of Biblical Christianity. However, Christians in modern times have often pushed their celebrities into the limelight far too quickly for their own good, and too quickly for the good of the Christian message.
As this drama unfolded there was certainly much which could be addressed. You could point to the risqué photos that surfaced after Christians had begun to make a hero of Carrie Prejean as evidence that she was being pushed onto stage too quickly, but many authors will cover that topic. You could point out that Miss California's answer at the Miss America Pageant was too tolerant toward same sex marriage, but this author spent hours formulating the structure of the criticism for this article so that it was not conciliatory toward evil yet not personally offensive toward individuals. Carrie Prejean had seconds to formulate the answer to her question.
The issue that needs to be addressed is the venue that launched Miss California to fame. Never mind the racy photos. Christians should not be running around on the beach in a bikini bathing suit, and they certainly should not be parading before full auditoriums and television cameras in bikinis.
Is homosexuality a worse evil than parading your mostly naked body across stage in front of a live audience? The answer to this question is probably yes, but an anti-Christian society is not the standard. Most of you know this, but are you living like you do. The tendency to feel good about oneself because you are not as evil as your lost neighbor is a danger which Christians must constantly guard. Embracing this kind of ethic erodes the church's influence on this decaying society. Wink at blasphemy in their entertainment, vote for the lesser of two evils in their elections, in general go along to get along. Christians need to live Biblically in every area of life, and they must make society go along with the Bible to get along with a Godly ethic.
Scripture reveals that although God is merciful He is also just and He will chastise His people for their sins because of His justice and His love for them. Romans 1 says that when a society accepts homosexuality it is because God has begun His judgment of that society. It is the fault of the church that this society has been given over to a reprobate mind. Godliness will not reign in this culture by pushing immature believers onto center stage to carry the Biblical message. Repent (turn), live Biblically in every aspect of your life. The church needs to set on center stage her mature members, who have an understanding of world-changing theology, rather than immature believers who have attained fame in a worldly manner, before a depraved world.
